What is Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray,  also called  mace, is  an  aerosol  device  ranging  is size usually  from  small  1/2 oz
canisters used in most keychain pepper sprays, up  to 24 oz riot  busting units used by the police. A
good size to carry with you at all times would be a 1/2 oz keychain because  the small size easily fits
in a pocket or purse.  A typical  good size to have in your home would be anywhere from a 2 oz to a
4 oz canister.  Most  pepper  sprays being sold today  shoot a liquid stream to a distance  of 8 to 12
feet depending upon  the  model  and size of the pepper spray unit. The active ingredient in pepper
spray is  Oleoresin  Capsicum and  is made   from  the strongest  hot  cayenne and other  peppers.
Strengths of this active  ingredient  range from 10% in many pepper spray brands,  to 1%  to  5% in
most  animal  repellent  sprays, and 17% in  Police Magnum  brand pepper spray.   All  formulas are
effective  in  stopping  most  animals  and  humans in  their tracks  with  just  one spray  to the face.
Pepper  spray  hotness  can also be measured  with Scoville  Heat Units (SHU). The SHU is the true
hotness of a  pepper  spray  product and its ability to  inflict temporary debilitating results.  The SHU
does vary by manufacturer, however  1 million SHU is  more than enough to stop an attacker. Police
Magnum and Equalizer pepper spray products are rated at 2 million SHU.
